Dating from circa 1875-1895, this antique 18ct gold watch chain is a versatile and substantial piece of historical jewellery, likely of Swiss or continental origin.
Crafted with intricate repoussé detailing throughout its central links, it measures 16 inches in total length, including a 2.5-inch removable extender, and is 9mm wide, providing substantial coverage on the neckline.
The main chain boasts a 17mm big bolt ring, 2.5mm thick with a 3.5mm raised ridge, ideal for holding pendants with large bails (a functional replacement for the original, maintaining visual continuity with the repoussé chain design). At the other end, there's a chunky Victorian-era dog clip (22.5mm) stamped with a crown and “18”. The extender features a matching pair of vintage repurposed clasps: a dog clip stamped “750” and an 11mm bolt ring.
Weighing 35.19g, this chain bears “18K” stamps on its fixed end links, along with faded partial hallmarks indicative of age and continental craftsmanship. A minor solder mark on the big bolt hints at past restoration, but all clasps are secure and fully functional.
Whether worn solo as a statement, layered with other antique chains, or styled as a convertible component, this is a collector-grade piece with enduring versatility.
