An exceptional antique locket, meticulously crafted in high-carat 21ct gold, featuring crossed arrows encrusted with rose-cut diamonds and a central emerald-accented detail. Likely of Portuguese origin, dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, this piece embodies the elaborate baroque and neoclassical influences seen in historical Portuguese jewellery. The crossed arrows and ribbon motif may symbolise strength, love, and devotion, themes often found in sentimental jewellery of the era.
This substantial locket weighs 29.38g and measures 70mm in total drop length (including the removable bail), with a 36.5mm width. The interior compartments are lined with original green silk, designed to hold keepsakes or portraits.
The gold purity has been confirmed through XRF testing, indicating a composition of 21ct gold or higher. While no hallmarks are visible, the craftsmanship and materials are consistent with fine Portuguese jewellery from this period.
This locket remains in excellent antique condition, with a natural patina commensurate with age. A small, unobtrusive ding is present on the case, but it does not detract from its overall beauty. Additionally, one tiny rose-cut diamond is missing, though it is barely noticeable given the intricate design. The locket compartments open and close securely, and the removable bail remains strong and functional.
This historically significant high-carat gold locket is a rare find, making it a remarkable addition to any fine antique jewellery collection.
